Royal County Berkshire Show By L/Cpl John Rowland
Saturday 20th September saw the Band performing at the Royal County of Berkshire show in Newbury. They met at the band hall in Romford at around 7:00 in the morning bringing yet another one of the early departures that are so very much loved!!
After a problem free journey and a rather interesting film, the band arrived at their destination and were promptly taken to their tent where they would be spending a lot of their time over the weekend. After unloading everything, a quick run through of the routine was carried out. The band then got changed and performed the first of two shows for the Saturday. Lunch and dinner was to be provided for this hard working bunch of musicians, which was thoroughly enjoyed over the weekend. Then there was a large amount of free time in which many band members decided to explore the vast area that the show grounds covered.
The band was due to perform the closing performance of the day, but one sight that was enjoyed by many was the launch of a number of varied balloons from the Vodafone Arena that flew over. However, the band had a job to do, and they did just that. After the second performance, it was time for dinner and then to the local village hall where they would be spending the night. Some of the older members made their way down to the local pub, where a good time was enjoyed by all who went.
Sunday started with a very early start with the band being woken up by the staff. Although half asleep, a lot of the older ones were soon awake when they ventured outside into the cold where the band made their way back to the show grounds where to be greeted by a fried breakfast.
The first performance of the day was for the harvest festival. Two short performances sandwiched the festival service where hymns were performed alongside a local choir group. Again, after the performance, the band had a very large amount of time for them to explore the rest of the show. It was during this time that the first and only casualty of the weekend was suffered when Cpl Laura Sammons suffered a shoulder injury and was out for the remaining shows.
Late afternoon was approaching and the band performed their second performance of the day to a very large crowd. After this, the band went off to prepare to have photos taken of them surrounded by members of the Household Cavalry, who were also performing at the show. Immediately afterwards, the band moved off to perform the last show of the weekend. After this had concluded, it was time for home.
The weekend, as a whole, was a very enjoyable affair and one that most band members would not be too upset to partake in again. Pictures coming soon...
